Coomber Homestead and Guest House – two classic Australian country gardens

Coomber 1

487 Cudgegong Road, Rylstone – 5 minutes south-west of Rylstone on the Cudgegong Road, between Rylstone and the Castlereagh Highway

Coomber2It’s no surprise the Homestead garden won The Sydney Morning Herald Garden Prize in 1967. Sweeping lawns dotted with well-established trees, such as golden elm and desert ash, are bordered with lush garden beds (planted five years ago) to provide a gentle, shady retreat. An edge of Elina roses – a subtle cream – frames the house.

This garden is being renewed in a grand style. One can imagine a table set with white linen and Royal Albert ‘country roses’. Across the paddock and past the shearers’ quarters, the Guest House garden sits beautifully in the farming landscape, providing 360° views of hills and fertile paddocks. Many of trees here were planted by Tim and Helen Evans in the 1960s: pin oaks, lindens, English elms, liquidambars and plane trees.

Pat’s Place – Set in Stone

Photo 16-2-18, 5 12 33 pm

83 Mudgee Street, Rylstone

Photo 16-2-18, 5 09 06 pmThis garden is of interest for its structural features as much as its plantings. Note as you enter, the 30cm thick stone wall on 10cm footings, which Pat built herself. The back stone section of the house was built in the 1890s and of even greater historical interest is the beehive well (learn more from the sign).

Wander along granite paths which take you to the boundaries of the garden, over a bridge, beside a fishpond, beneath arches and under trees (pin oaks, Manchurian pears and Chinese elm). Honeysuckle, star jasmine, wisteria and grape vines, soften roofs and walls. Pieces of whimsy hide among the plants. Pat has chosen hardy plants and waters her garden using well water and recycled household water.

Photo 3-10-17, 9 44 22 am copyRae and Guy Sim built their house and began planting this sweeping nine-acre garden 12 years ago. Guy is the structural builder and designer and you will see his handiwork in water courses, rock culverts, climbing frames, stonework, terraces and well-placed, eye-catching sculptural pieces. Rae is the green-fingered artist, designing, planting and nurturing a spectacular range of trees (deciduous, fruiting and native) and bushes; as well as perennials, bulbs, succulents and annuals in pots, beds and paddocks. Their garden continues to evolve, relying on spring water pumped up to two 22,500 litre tanks sitting near the highway.

Photo 3-10-17, 9 52 24 amMeaning the spirit of the northwest wind, “Keewaydin” has its origin in the story of Hiawatha. Great location and first garden to visit for those travelling from Lithgow, Sydney or the Blue Mountains.

Morning and afternoon teas and light lunches will be served by Ilford/Running Stream CWA.

With a backdrop of mature Kurrajong trees, rocky outcrops and rolling hills, Ludwig’s garden and courtyard is an enthralling outdoor assembly of contemporary sculpture on a grand scale.

DSC08845Ludwig Mlcek is an accomplished professional sculptor who works in metal, stone and timber. In collaboration with Rylstone Sculptures Inc., Ludwig initiated and convened the October 2015 Rylstone Sculpture Symposium. He has participated in the famous Bondi ‘Sculpture by the Sea’ on three occasions. You will be able to glimpse but not enter Ludwig’s impressive workshop studio.

DSC08872His garden, which is also home to a miniature pony, features a converted meat house (now an accommodation unit) with an intricately carved wooden door. There is a stone fruit orchard and vegetable gardens.

Over the weekend Ludwig will offer occasional walking/talking sculpture tours.

Kandos Gardens Fair 2016- and so it comes again…

KandosGardenFair_BuchananSt1

On April 2 and 3 2016, Kandos will again showcase its gardens in the CWA Kandos Gardens Fair. And this time around we can promise it will be bigger and better than ever.

Historic country cottages with Winton outside Rylstone

Over the weekend a dozen gardens will be open to the public – all diverse. From “in town” gardens to working properties, artist homes, newly established gardens and even a Convent. In addition, there will be lots to see and do.

We are so excited to announce that Costa Georgiadis, yes, from ABC Gardening, will be coming, as well as gardening writer, Fiona Ogilvie, who writes for The Land and Diego Bonetto, a “wild food forager”. All will be available and at gardens throughout the weekend.

In addition we have a Saturday Market, art trail and so much more for keen gardeners, including workshops and talks. A full program will be available shortly.

Converted community halls offer surprises to every visitor

This time around, Kandos CWA are sponsoring the event and are actively involved in the organisation. The theme is “Gardening in a harsh environment” and the gardens will showcase how wonderful and different gardens can be established and flourish in an area with limited water, bitter frosts and real summers.

Expansive country properties with resilient natives and handmade drystone walls

You’ll hear and find out lots more between now and 2 and 3 April but we would love to see you so put the dates in your calendar. We recommend taking the weekend to explore the full program and see all the gardens – in which case, book in accommodation early. The local Rylstone and Kandos website has lots of accommodation information.

We will see you all on 2 and 3 April 2016!

Preview – a Courtyard Garden

June1

‘The Hall’
June and Brian Keech 23 Rodgers Street Kandos
June3A little over three years ago this small, unique, courtyard garden was a rough patch of kikuyu and weeds. An area was levelled and the workshop erected using recycled materials. The brief was to have a low maintenance and water efficient garden. A small rainwater tank supplies drinking water. The majority of plantings were ‘potted-up’ from the owners’ previous garden and chosen for their hardiness, diversity of foliage and variety of shapes and colours. Succulents, agaves and other desert plants sit happily amongst hardy trees and shrubs from the Mediterranean Region. Prominent throughout is Garden ‘Art’, all of which has been salvaged from tips and throw-aways and reinvented. It is an easy-care garden which looks good all year round. And the best feature for the owners? No lawn mower!

Attractions at the Hall:

  • Found Objects Stall
  • Basket Weaving & Floral Work
  • Ad-Hoc (recycled furniture for home and garden)

Poet-tree in the Garden

At our last Kandos Gardens Fair in 2011 local poet Leanne Wicks invited
visitors to partake of poetry in the garden. She was in Margaret Casley’s
Whimsical Garden at Kandos. Throughout the day Leanne invited visitors to
enjoy poetry as she read poems, wrote poems and sold poems.

This year Leanne has been working with Lue Public School students to create
a “Poet-tree”. In two of the gardens at the Kandos Gardens Fair visitors
will probably discover poems hanging in branches. They are invited to take
home a poem.

Local poet Terry Yates will also be sharing poetry in the gardens. He had
two popular poetry reading sessions in a 2010 garden. The KGF program, now
in the planning, will have details about the time and place to enjoy some
poetry readings.

The BIG KGF Raffle – Coming Soon!

So many great prizes for gardeners! And thanks to our generous local sponsors.

So many great prizes for gardeners! And thanks to our generous local sponsors.

September is our raffle month. We will be sitting inside IGA at Kandos on three Fridays in September – 6th , 13th and 20th. Hopefully we will get good warm Spring days because it can be a bit miserable in front of the opening and closing doors. However we can’t complain – the more IGA customers that come through the doors, the more tickets we will sell!

We are lucky to have such a good business like IGA in town who supports local volunteer groups to hold raffles. Just imagine if we had to sit outside! We will also be selling tickets at Rylstone Markets on 14th September so please drop by.

We have found the raffle is a good money-raiser and also an opportunity to promote the Kandos Gardens Fair. Our cork-boards will have a poster, photos of past KGF events, a list of our wonderful sponsors and a list of prizes. And there will be a whole bunch of orange flyers to hand out.

Support from local businesses in supplying raffle prizes has been gratifying. As an example Bruce’s Garden Centre in Dabee Road, Kandos, donated the wine barrel planter and three bags of fertiliser as part of our first prize. Bruce has a wonderful selection of plants, mulches, fertilisers, pots, barrels and garden art, as well as firewood (see below). Prices are good too. A number of his wine barrels and pots have been rehomed at the Convent and many other gardens in the area. It’s worth spending a bit of time at Bruce’s looking around as he has some treasures not readily found in many of the bigger commercial nurseries.

Rylstone Agricultural Supplies donated the four packs of mulch for the first prize. Colleen’s chooks (sadly no longer with us) would highly recommend the chook food from there.

Spend some time investigating Bruce’s Garden Centre and you’re sure to come away with a treasure.
